Upcoming Cosmic Horror Film Takes Aim at the Commodification of Human Art

LOS ANGELES, June 11, 2026 — Hot on the heels of wrapping principal photography for its debut feature, independent studio Khepri Films announced today the official greenlight of its second feature film, THE KING IN YELLOW. Pre-production and the assembly of the core creative team are currently underway for the ambitious, single-location indie horror.

A modern reimagining of Robert W. Chambers' classic 1895 mythos, THE KING IN YELLOW follows a jaded Hollywood writer who reluctantly attends an isolated Mojave Desert retreat to workshop a script for a visionary, billionaire director. The workshop turns into a fight for survival when she discovers the director is actually an ancient cosmic entity murdering her A-list friends and replacing them with flawless, synthetic doppelgängers.

To survive, the writer must weaponize the one thing the entity cannot replicate: her own flawed, messy humanity.

"In an era when the industry is rushing to replace messy, passionate artists with cheap, frictionless, and synthetic content, The King in Yellow is a horror film about what gets lost when you do that," said writer, director, and Khepri Films founder Mark Christopher Havenner. "Imperfections and unexpected moments are what make stories matter. Flaws are the one thing a machine cannot fake. We are building a movie that proves audiences still crave practical, human-focused, real-world art."

The greenlight of THE KING IN YELLOW marks a rapid expansion for Khepri Films, coming just weeks after the studio wrapped principal photography on its found-footage cosmic horror debut, THE END IS TRENDING.

With the core team assembling this month, THE KING IN YELLOW is slated to utilize heavily contained, single-location shooting in the Joshua Tree area, allowing the production to heavily invest its budget into top-tier practical special effects.
